The Night I Sat on a Moving Box and Hated My Living Room

I was 22 when I unpacked the last box in our new house, sat down on it, and realized I didn’t like a single room I had just spent three weekends arranging.

Everything was technically fine. The sofa fit the wall. The rug matched the curtains. The art was hung at the height every magazine told me to hang it. And yet the whole place felt like a furniture showroom that someone had forgotten to switch the lights on in.

I knew that feeling well, because for twelve years I had actually worked in furniture showrooms. I styled floor displays for a home furnishings retailer, moving lamps two inches to the left so a stranger would fall in love with a sectional. I was good at it. I could make a room look perfect for exactly one weekend sale.

What I had never learned was how to make a room feel good to live in on a rainy Tuesday, with a dog asleep on the cushions and coffee rings on the side table.

My husband found me on that box around eleven at night. He handed me a cup of tea and said, “So we start over?” I said yes. That was the quiet beginning of HomeDecorGen, although it took me years to give it a name.

Why Real Homes Deserve Better Advice

Here is something I learned from the inside. A lot of decor inspiration is built for photographs, not for people. Rooms get styled for one perfect angle, shot in perfect light, and then taken apart an hour later.

Nobody lives in those rooms. Nobody vacuums them. Nobody has a toddler, a teenager, or an elderly parent moving through them every day.

Most of us are decorating around a landlord’s beige walls, a budget that has to cover groceries too, and a sofa we bought before we knew better. That is real life, and honestly, I think it deserves far more respect than it gets.

I started this site because I wanted to write the kind of advice I needed back then. Practical. Honest about cost. Kind to the home you already have.

If Your Home Doesn’t Quite Feel Like Yours Yet

I write for people who walk into their own living room and feel a little bit like a guest.

You might be:

A renter who can’t paint, drill, or replace anything, and still wants a space that feels warm
Someone who just moved and is staring at empty walls with no idea where to begin
A parent trying to keep one corner of the house calm and grown up
A person who has bought a lot of nice things that somehow never come together
A reader with a great eye who is simply tired of advice that assumes an unlimited budget

A Few Things You Should Know About Me

Most About pages say the writer has always loved design. I’d rather tell you the small, true stuff.

I keep an old mason jar full of paint chips from every room I have ever painted. There are over two hundred in there now, and I still dig through it before choosing a new color.
I repaint our front door every spring. My neighbors have started placing bets on the color.
The most loved object in our house is a scratched oak side table my grandfather built in his garage. It has survived four moves and one very determined puppy.
I measure everything twice and still, once a year, buy a rug that is the wrong size. I have made peace with this.
I live in Columbus, Ohio, in a 2015s split-level with my husband, our two kids, and a rescue beagle named Pickle who believes every throw pillow belongs to her.
I have been writing about homes in one way or another since 2018, when I started sending styling tips to showroom staff in a little weekly email. That email slowly became the first draft of this site.

I take every article here personally. People come to this site when they are about to spend real money on their homes, and I don’t want to be the reason someone buys the wrong sofa.

Every piece on HomeDecorGen is researched and checked before it goes live. Every article goes through a review with me as Senior Editor, no matter who wrote the first draft.

Each article then gets a second edit for clarity, accuracy, and tone. Once an article is more than a year old, we come back to it and rewrite anything that no longer holds up, because styles change, products get discontinued, and advice that worked in 2024 might not work for you today.

If a link earns us a commission, or a piece is sponsored, we say so clearly at the top of the article. You will never have to guess.

That is the promise I make to every reader. If we ever fall short of it, I genuinely want to hear about it.
